Watercolour inspiration for FIA research
The sea for years has not only petrified me, but also always kept me in awe of its beauty. It is full of contradictions, iridescent yet at times inky black. The colours of the sea and its inhabitants have some of the most amazing pigmentation yet despite this beauty, some of the inhabitants still fill me with fear. I can be out at sea, riding in the boat feeling the exhilaration and marveling at the beauty yet aware of its ferocious force, the force that crumbles, erodes and batters. I glide along the water’s surface, mesmerised by the reflections and glimmers, longing to plunge into its inky depths yet frightened by the creatures that lay beneath.
I will soon be embarking on a voyage of discovery, visiting via boat Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro and returning to a beloved place, Venice.
Venice, for me is the renaissance buildings, the beauty, the romance, and the mystical. It is where husband, my children and I were in awe of the history, culture architecture and art and it is of course surrounded by the sea. The above water colour was purchased on our visit in 2002, the colours and tones are the essence of what I hope to capture and the bridge may look beautiful but it led prisoners to there death in a long gone era.
Venice is fast sinking into the sea, the sea reclaiming land like the mythical lost city of Atlantis. In my sampling and designs I want to explore the beauty as well as the darkness of Venice. I aim to use photographic imagery and watercolour paintings to develop patterns and designs for fabric. In essence capturing the beauty and preserving it, using the reflective nature of water to capture the image of the architecture that is above.
